Healing with Hippocrates

He was born on the island of Kos in the 5th century BC. Hippocrates, considered the most famous physician of antiquity, established a medical school on the island of his birth and went down in history as the founder of modern medicine for his systematic, experimental study of diseases and their treatment.

Hippocrates was a physician who focused on a natural approach to treating disease. He understood the importance of understanding the mental health of the patient and emphasised that in order to be healthy, the individual needed to establish a harmonious balance between himself, his social life and his natural environment.

For him, a healthy body alone, a healthy mental structure alone or a healthy spiritual existence alone was almost impossible.

“A healthy mind in a healthy body” was the main component of the Hippocratic philosophy.

Our nature. Our DNA.

Although thousands of years have passed since Hippocrates, the human body has not changed. In fact, the things we need to do to live healthily are quite simple:

To live by always remembering that we are part of the ecosystem of our earth, without being stubborn with our nature, by getting to know our body well and meeting the needs of our nature.

  • Eating clean and healthy food,
  • Exercise,
  • Awareness of our emotional states,
  • Being in warm, sincere, deep social relationships.

These may seem like clichés today, but they can be the basic steps to a healthy, happy and fulfilled life. This was the case in the years before Christ, and it is the same in 2024 AD. Let’s listen to Hippocrates’ very important and valuable words about human health:

“Walking is man’s best medicine.

“Explain the past, analyse the present, predict the future.”

“If you are in a bad mood, go for a walk; if you are still in a bad mood, go for another walk.”

“Knowing which person has the disease is much more important than knowing which disease the person has.”

“The natural healing power within each of us is the greatest force in our healing.”

“Before you heal someone, ask them if they are willing to give up what makes them sick.”

“What is used flourishes. That which is not used is wasted.

“A wise man should regard health as the greatest of human blessings and know that he has much to learn from his illnesses.”

“The soul is the same in all creatures, though the body of each is different.”

“The natural forces within us are the true healers of disease.

“If we could give each individual the right amount of food and exercise, neither too little nor too much, we would have found the surest way to health.”

“All the parts of the body which have a function, if used in moderation, and employed in the work to which each is accustomed, will be healthy, grow well, and age slowly; but if not used, they will be liable to disease, defective in growth, and age rapidly.”

“All disease begins in the intestines.

“When sleep puts an end to delirium, it is a good symptom.”

“Disease is not an entity, but a fluctuating state of the patient’s body, a struggle between disease-causing factors and the body’s natural tendency to heal itself.”
